Cooking for Symbolic Eating

This week we were cooking with the theme of “Symbolism.” We went about this in several different manners. Since Passover was coming within a week, food commonly used for that celebration where featured heavily. We sources all our food from the Decatur Farmer’s Market, unless otherwise noted.\
Due to a lack of time, Challah bread was purchased. Challah bread has many important symbolic attributes in Judaism, such as the 12 braids in two 6 braided challahs representing the 12 loaves of Showbread at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem – each representing a tribe of Israel.
We also purchased dates, which are important are very important in Islam. Notably they are used to break ones fast for Ramadan
We made vegan curry with rice which
For the dessert we made cheesecake, which brings to mind the cultural diversity in the bakeries of New York City, along with some vegan cupcakes purchased from Dulce Vegan in Kirkwood, Georgia. Both of these are symbolic of celebrations.
Finally ginger tea was served as a beverage. It has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries and tea has a variety of ceremonies associated with it; none of which we used in this dinner.
Dr. Crane also brought a variety of other symbolic foods, notably charoset, matzah, communion wafers, and horseradish.

Charoset
We do not have exact recipes as the majority of the food was made out of habits and guesswork, however reflections are added where possible.
